5th Annual Abdelkader Education Project Forum Emir Abdelkader - Connecting Cultures Across Centuries Saturday May 2-3, 2014 in Elkader, Iowa Join free public events to honor 2014 Abdelkader Global Leadership Prize essay students and recall Emir Abdelkader’s legacy with significance for today’s global society. Admired by President Lincoln, Queen Victoria and Pope Pius IX, Emir Abdelkader continues to inspire people of all cultures and faiths. Keynote speaker Daisy Khan will discuss “Emir Abdelkader – A True Muslim Hero: Connecting Cultures, Countering Extremism.” Ms. Khan, executive director for American Society for Muslim Advancement, has been hailed a link between moderate Islam and the West. She lectures around the globe and participates in panels with Christians, Jews, and Buddhists. She has appeared on CNN, BBC, Aljazeera, and is a weekly columnist for Washington Post’s “On Faith.” Daisy Khan is on the New York Police Department Advisory Board and presents globally for the U.S. State Department. Janice Gross, Seth Richards Professor at Grinnell College, will address the chronology of the emir’s life and influence. Special guests will also share their stories. The Elkader launch of John Kiser’s biography Commander of the Faithful: The Life and Times of Emir Abdelkader produced a local essay contest, which now includes national participation, and has evolved into the Abdelkader Education Project with global outreach and many components. “The Abdelkader Education Project offers students a chance to engage with a narrative of history not often discussed in Western classrooms.
