5th Day of Advent You may have seen the term ‘narrative’ - TopicsExpress

5th Day of Advent You may have seen the term ‘narrative’ used in connection with the Bible, a term that has a deeper meaning than just ‘story’. The meaning of narrative includes a: # Detailed account # Recital, and # History of events that are ALL CONNECTED. These events can be past, present or future, real or imagined. # Luke tells Theophilus that ‘many have drawn up an account of things that have been fulfilled among us’ (implying he was there for at least some of the events) (Luke 1:1 and Acts 1:1), and # After thorough investigation he was drawing up orderly account so that Theophilus ‘might have certainty’ of what he has been taught. # Luke is clearly telling us that the Jesus narrative is factual and not made up. As the narrative (story) unfolds we learn that we the gentiles have been grafted on and become part of God’s people and can call Him Father… Bible Reading Romans 11:17 and John 15:1-18 6 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches. 17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root… (John 15:1-8) 1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. Prayer for the Day 5th December 2014 O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin but active in his service and joyful in his praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
