5th September 2014 Territory Duty Superintendent (acting Supt.) Garry Smith A touching case that would even make the hardest in society choke up ~ as it did to me. This post is not written to incite criticism or blame anyone and I ask that if you wish to comment then do so in a non-confrontational or demeaning manner please. I am not going to identify the location to protect people’s privacy. It also highlights some of the tear jerking job’s you’re Police Officers and other agencies attend to. However more importantly highlight’s that mental illness can affect us all in some way and there is professional medical help available throughout our Territory. It can be a confusing time for all involved. Yesterday Two Police Officers were made aware of a young man who had self-remained in his bedroom for two years due to a fear he had formed. He ventured outside on the rarest of occasions before always returning to his own safe place and remaining behind his locked door. He was provided the necessities of life by family however they really didn’t know how to help him or deal with the situation. After some time the Police Officers gained a rapport and were able to gently convince him out and into the care of medical and mental health practitioners. A working bee was formed and his bedroom spruced up a bit. He is now under care and we all hope he has a bright future. Well done to “the Coppers” for your compassion, sensitivity and ability to gain the trust of someone who needed intervention. Remember, seek help if you are confronted by a mental illness, not just yourself, also you’re loved ones.
