6-1-2014 pp. 542-the end. These are the things I remember from reading the last forty pages on the plane last Tuesday. 1. I noticed that Margret returns exactly at the 90 percent mark. That is always an important point--the climax has to get moving right there. 2. I am sympathetic with Gunnar and Jon Andres, and I think that Bjorn Bollason is a feckless, well-meaning suck-up, as so many politicians are, and also that he went too far in burning Kollgrim at the stake, but it is really really bad to kill off the only person who knows what the laws are. 3. When the church falls apart and the secular authority falls apart, then it is inevitable that the various districts will turn inward, and the general system will devolve. 4. I had forgotten that a few enterprising Greenlanders decide, Vinland or Bust. 5. Oh, the Bristol Men. Could they possibly have been more ruthless than the descendants of the Vikings? I do not remember where I read about them, but the visit of these Bristol pirates and raiders to Iceland and far western parts of the north Atlantic was accepted at the time--cod-fishing was their original goal. They may not have been more ruthless in theory, but they were better armed. 6. I remember getting a letter from a reader who was enraged that Gunnar felt remorse, because a true Viking would not feel any remorse. The return address was a mental institution. 7. I still love the last bit, where the children peep out of the bedcloset, and ask for a story. 8. Yes, Gunnar did write this book. You believe me, don’t you?
