6-12-24 HOUR WORLDS COMING TO BORREGO SPRINGS Race Across - TopicsExpress

6-12-24 HOUR WORLDS COMING TO BORREGO SPRINGS Race Across America riders and fans know of Borrego Springs, California—it’s the little desert town at the bottom of the famed “Glass Elevator” descent. When RAAM racers drop down into Borrego Springs each year in June they’re greeted by searing heat, one racer described the usual 100+ degree temperatures as “…dropping into a pizza oven!” There are miles and miles of quiet back roads surrounding Borrego Spring’s “downtown” that see very little motorist use. That along with some excellent lodging choices is the reason that in late May and early June the town hosts several RAAM and RAW racers who arrive early to train without auto traffic and to acclimate to that infamous heat. In November the town and surrounding quiet roads take on a decidedly different flavor as those oven-like temperatures end and daytime temperatures drop into the high 70’s to low 80’s with overnight lows in the 50’s. Which is one of the many reasons that RAAM’s brass has decided to move this year’s 6-12-24 Hour World Championships there on November 14-15 on a course using some of those great backloads, a course on which riders from around the world will seek the answer to the question “How many miles can you ride in 6, 12 or 24 hours?” To make things even more interesting the 24-hour race is a RAAM Qualifier. To preview the course maps and elevation profiles follow this link: 24hrworlds/24/index.php?N_webcat_id=362 The race is open to solo racer and to teams of 2 or 4 riders. Racing is non-drafting time trial format. Competitors cannot draft off each other. Teams may have all members on the road at once riding in a pace line or race relay style, but they are not allowed to draft other teams. The compact course provides racers with an opportunity to experience world-class UltraCycling without the expense and hassle of having a follow car. Riders need to be self-sufficient on course and there will also be a neutral support station at the start/finish where riders can fix flats or do repairs.
