6/13/1872 — #wmnhist #law Chrystal Macmillan, lawyer, suffragist, pacifist, b. Edinburgh, Scotland. The first female science graduate and first female honors graduate in mathematics, University of Edinburgh. She was a member of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (1902), the Edinburgh Ladies Debating Society, and honorary secretary and treasurer of the Committee of Women Graduates of the Scottish Universities. The first woman to plead before the House of Lords (1908), when she argued that women graduates should be given the vote. The case was rejected and as a result she published the pamphlet, ‘The Struggle for Political Liberty’ (1909). She served on the executive board of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies, was a member of the Women’s Freedom League, and vice-president of the International Women’s Suffrage Alliance (1913). Practiced as a barrister of the English bar, specializing in the nationally laws of married women (1924). A founder of the Open Door Council (1923), addressing equal employment opportunities of women, and a founder and president of Open Door International (1929). Ran unsuccessfully as a Liberal for Edinburgh North in the general election (1935).
