6-26-13 So, what goes on under those deck plates in the engine room? Here are a few photos of the piping, etc under the aluminum deck plates at the forward part of the engine room. The engine room is getting a much needed ‘make over’ and cleaning on the port side by about a half a dozen enthused volunteers. There are also three large fresh water tanks under the engine room (sort of a double hull) and a couple of smaller ones. Everything has remained dry in the bilge for the past four years but needs a good cleaning. Various pipes are being painted to better track what they are and where they come from and go to. Thanks today for volunteers Tom Payne, Chief Engineer; Meredith Anderson, Assistant to the Chief Engineer; John Healey engine room wiper and Connor Vincent, Savannah McIntyre and Jordan Peterson assisting as needed and doing a lot of the heavy work (Comanche Youth Volunteers) and Joe Peterson, boatswain mate of the watch (BMOW). DC electricians will be aboard Friday for the next round of tests and work in the engine room. Anyone can volunteer… it’s grimy, dirty, often smelly work but wholly worth it. Lean what it means to work in a real ship engine room!
