6-29-13 Ketchikan, AK Saturday On Thursday the weather forecast looked good so I got an early start for my crossing of Dixon Entrance. The day ranks as one of the top three sails ever I had. Sunny, mild seas, and enough wind to sail 6 knots on a close hull. Anchored at Foggy Bay. Next day looked to be a repeat but the winds petered out and had to motor up Revillagigedo Channel and Tongass Narrows into Ketchikan. Rick, the Harbor Master found me a nice slip where I will be hanging a few days waiting for my Crew to arrive. I’ve learned that Wrangle is the place to be on Independence Day, too bad, Dawn does not arrive until the 2nd and it would be sketchy to make it up there in 2 days. Ketchikan has little to offer, spent the day walking the town and I am sorely disappointed. The Frontier, a dance hall I got thrown out of here 20 years ago now sells cheap Alaskan trinkets to Disney Cruise Line patrons. So I had a beer at the Totem, learned that in the past 20 years the Pulp Mill shut down and half the fishing fleet disappeared. I see little hope for this place, dry rot waiting to happen, like the ghost towns I passed in Canada on the way up here. All the fishing guides are booked up with the Cruise Ships in town, don’t want to take Rascal out and risk losing my spot so I guess I will take the skiff out tomorrow and try my own luck at fishing.
