€6.90 album pick @ firebox.fi/store Scorngrain - Cyberwarmachine CD https://youtube/watch?v=gsjUQEzzByY Industrial music seems to come in three strains... from the experimental angle (the early out stuff like Einsturzende Neubauten, Coil, Foetus, Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire) from the dance angle (plenty of music I dont listen to) and from the metal angle (Ministry from The Land of Rape and Honey onward), with Skinny Puppy being the most popular act to combine all three angles. Coming very much from the metal angle we have Scorngrain. Straightforward metal riffing and 1, 2 beats are iced with coin-op synth bleeps and boops a la Machinae Supremacy. The drum sounds are surprisingly more natural than exaggerated industrial crunch., and the occasional breakbeat interludes are a positive thing, more tastefully programmed and incorporated than those of, say, Sybreed. The vocals are a traditional growl and its higher pitched partner, rasp. Detours range from silly (walrus-like operaticisms, hysterical yelping about a coming onslaught of cyberclones) to awful (the nu-rap in 24-7 Hell). Cyberwarmachine has a fun militant chant bridge. Flesh Means Pain has a mini-solo in the beginning, the only lead guitar on the album. Its solid, in a classic-rock style. The coda of the track is where they bring the slow stomp and chord progression drama. Killing Breed combines blast beats with videotronic squiggles, which few dare to do save Horse The Band. This may be the best track, being both grim and goofy with a brisker pace and tremolo picking. 4D Religion has some funny carnival organ in the beginning. There is only one version of New Paradise on the disc, which they insist is the Bukkake remix. Whats with the bukkake fixation in metal culture of late? Yeah, I guess its extreme, but so is slurping down menstrual blood and thick clots of lining but we dont hear about that, now do we? Maybe a female metal band will write a much more reality-grounded gender reversal of Cannibal Corpses I Cum Blood... New Paradise does have a great phone-EQ guitar riff in the intro, with a slowly bent pinch-harmonic squeal grooving over breakbeat antics. And how can one not chuckle when at 2:06 the singer just goes BLEH!? Maybe dude just had a taste of his own bukkake medicine... No Funeral for the Last opens with NIN-style tonalities on distorted mock-piano, and after a segue involving a nice chug-chug echo, turns into a 4-chord rocker with synth and organ recalling Machinae Supremacy or the end of Bombs over Baghdad by Outkast. This discs strong suit is the electronic ear candy, best appreciated on headphones. These guys really are talented with a sequencer. If you want totally serious metal, pass. But if you want metal that goes zap! to headbang to while playing the latest first-person shooter game, this is prime. Load up the chain gun, cause Scorngrain is about to frag your ass in deathmatch.
