6 April 1857 ‘The Uncle of William B Pye an Orphan of the age of 15 years maintained in the Union Workhouse at the cost of the Parish of Horningtoft applied to take him out into his service as a Farmer in America having already paid his passage from this country. As the said William B Pye had been maintained in the Workhouse for the last 6 years and upwards it was agreed that he be allowed the sum of 45/- to provide him with a portion of the requisite clothing on his leaving the House to enter into such service in like manner as that allowance has been usually given in similar cases.’ America - I bet he was very excited to be starting a whole new life across the sea.
