6 Augusta buildings added to Historic Augusta’s list of endangered structures The historic preservation group added three Broad Street commercial buildings, two Greene Street houses and a home on Central Avenue to its 2015 Endangered Prop­er­ties list. The buildings, some of which have holes in the roof and broken windows and are vacant, should be preserved to maintain the city’s rich history, the group says. The annual list is intended to bring attention to buildings of historic significance that are in danger of being lost because of neglect, nearby development, vacancy or changes to the building that are inconsistent with historic design. The list was revealed Tuesday during a news conference at Historic Augusta’s headquarters on Seventh Street. “We can never name all the buildings because they are really far too numerous,” said Erick Montgomery, Historic Augusta’s executive director. The Mary Warren Home, a former residence for widowers and indigent women on Central Avenue, is already on the upward swing. The facility was purchased a week ago by someone who wants to perform a historic renovation, possibly turning it into student housing, Montgomery said. “We’re optimistic this will be a happy ending,” he said.
