6 Ayurveda Myths Busted!!! Enlisting myths about Ayurveda is the easiest thing to do; there are way too many things we hear about Ayurveda and its treatment procedures, that we could even write a book on it. These misconceptions have quite successfully managed to trivialize a medical science that dates back to the dawn of time. Amidst the many, we have managed to decode 6 most popular myths: 1. This is the first myth that needs to be broken; ‘Ayurveda is the last option’. There is something about Ayurveda that cannot go unnoticed; people get to it as the last option, only after facing a series of failures trying out other forms of medicine. Since Ayurveda gets to the grass-root level to cure a disease or bring balance, shouldn’t it be approached at the very beginning? There is no point when the disease has already inflated and caused enough damage, as it makes it difficult even for Ayurveda to cure it! Ayurveda heals quickly if used early on. 2. ‘Ayurveda takes a very long time to heal’. It is but obvious: the more time we take to approach Ayurveda, the disease has progressed and reached a severe stage and naturally any form of medicine will take longer to cure. As mentioned earlier, Ayurveda tries to restore balance in our lives, and balancing certainly cannot be done overnight. Striking the right balance needs modifying our lifestyles and our habits, which consumes time. Ayurveda helps… slowly but surely! 3. ‘Ayurveda is against modern medicine’. One commonly asked question is, can Ayurvedic medicine be taken simultaneously while on allopathic medicine? Dr. Sanjay Pisharodi, Course Consultant, Kerala Ayurvedic Academy, USA, says ‘The answer is an absolute YES!’ In fact both can complement each other very well. There is no harm in supplementing your allopathic medicine with Ayurvedic treatment because both of them act in different ways and they will enhance and help each other to bring a holistic feeling of health and well-being. Ayurveda and Allopathic medicine go very well with each other. 4. ‘Ayurveda is not practical. There are too many restrictions’. Well, changing a habit that has been a consistent part of you for years or even decades, is NOT easy. It needs a persistent, disciplined and systematic approach. So, can discipline be brought about without restrictions? 5. ‘Ayurveda is very expensive.’ Ayurveda becomes expensive only when we allow a disease to aggravate. But what remains forgotten is the fact, that the science of Ayurveda starts from our own kitchen. There are several home remedies to cure almost all ailments. All the herbs like your turmeric, ginger, cumin and mustard… if we learn how to use them effectively, we can prevent dreadful diseases at a very early stage. So that becomes very inexpensive, doesn’t it? Only if we allow a disease to enhance… we need elaborate treatments, and Ayurvedic oils, herbs and other natural medicines come into play. That is because the disease has gone from a simple to a complicated stage. But, isn’t modern medicine expensive? When was the last time we heard that a heart surgery is a matter of a few thousands??? 6. ‘Ayurveda is very complicated and difficult to understand’. There is absolutely nothing that is simpler, easier and more natural than Ayurveda. The fundamental concept of Ayurveda is not about Sanskrit words and jargon… it is about understanding the basic concepts like what is wet, what is dry, what is hot, what is cold, what is heavy, what is light and so on and so forth. Ayurveda brings balance into our lives… and balance is extremely simple, unless we choose to complicate it. Ayurveda is THE health science for common beings like you and I. Isn’t it already time to embrace it?
