6 New Year’s resolutions that will make a real difference to your team Into the New Year and the customary time of self-reflection, contemplation and good intentions. Even if you don’t always say them out aloud, I suspect most of us have thought about the things we’d like to start doing, continue doing or stop doing altogether as we go again in 2014. There’s always something that can be developed. What to focus on and where to start? A points to 6 key areas that leaders can influence and can make a big difference (up to 30%) to team performance. These ‘organizational climate’ dimensions have the greatest impact on how effectively your people can do their jobs. 1- Flexibility – Do you have unnecessary rules and procedures in your team? Do people find it relatively easy to innovate and get new ideas accepted? Do people feel they have to fight against unreasonable constraints? Why not work with your team to review these unnecessary blockages, seek their feedback, encourage creativity and help them put ideas into practice. 2- Responsibility – Do you delegate enough? Are your people encouraged to use their initiative? Do your team have freedom to act and are they encouraged to exercise their own judgement? 3- Standards 4- Rewards– This is the degree to which team members feel that they are being recognised and rewarded for good work, and that such recognition is directly and differentially related to specific levels of performance. Do you recognise and reward people on a timely basis? 5- Clarity– This is probably the most important of all the dimensions because it consistently shows the strongest relationship to employee productivity. Are your team clear about priorities and what is expected of them? Are they clear about how their role fits into the larger goals of the organisation? 6- Team commitment– The extent to which people are proud to belong to the organisation and can trust that others are working towards a common objective. As patterns of behaviour for leaders significantly impact these important ‘organizational climate’ dimensions and despite good intentions, old habits re-emerge when the going gets tough. So,....
