6 Tips to Defy Your Age and Look Younger Dont want to look your age? Forget the expensive eye creams and wrinkle reducers. Here are six affordable ways you can fight Mother Nature to look and feel as young as possible--from eating foods that are rich in antioxidants to changing your attitude. Lisa Reed, a certified personal trainer and owner of Lisa Reed Fitness in Arlington, Virginia, told WTOP News that health and lifestyle habits have a huge impact on reversing the effects of aging. Six tips to defy your age and look younger, according to Lisa Reed: 1. Eat a diet rich in anti-aging antioxidants Blame it on free radicals. Our bodies are invaded with damaging free radicals in two ways: First, as a chemical byproduct that is created when the body turns food into energy, as well as from the outside environment. Free radicals cause damage by changing our DNA and even the structure of cells. That makes us look older. But the body can fight free radicals with antioxidants--the superhero of aging. Foods rich in antioxidants include red beans, all types of berries, artichoke hearts, sweet cherries, black plums, broccoli, sweet potatoes, russet potatoes, plums and apples. 2. Strength training Reed calls exercise an anti-aging miracle. Weight training is truly the answer to the fountain of youth, she insists. Why? By building muscle, your body burns fat faster. That in turn helps create a toned body that makes you look and feel younger. 3. Eat fiber-rich foods If you add fiber to your diet--found in such foods as oatmeal and nuts--you will naturally consume fewer calories every day. Fiber also helps fight chronic diseases that are associated with aging and is key to keeping cholesterol and blood sugar in check. 4. Drink lots of water When you drink water, you hydrate your body. That not only helps keep your skin moisturized and firm, but also helps prevent sore muscles and keeps your mind sharp. And the opposite is also true. If you dont drink enough water, those wrinkles will be more visible. 5. Eat less sugar and more protein Oh, we do love our sweets, but sugar causes inflammation and actually depletes your energy. The natural sugars that are found in fruit are fine to eat, but do avoid the processed sugar found in sweets. Instead of eating that doughnut, choose a food high in protein, such as eggs, chicken, tuna, fish or tofu. Protein helps speed up your metabolism and gives you energy. 6. Think positive thoughts Having a positive outlook on life is one of the best ways to look and feel younger. Stop focusing on your flaws and start tallying up what you like about yourself. Increasing your self-esteem will instantly decrease your age, says Reed. --From the Editors at Netscape
