#6 of the 7 Most Common Sports Injuries: Patellofemoral Syndrome. Patellofemoral pain syndrome may be caused by overuse, injury, being over weight, a kneecap that is not properly aligned (patellar tracking disorder), or roughing of the cartilage under the kneecap. It is characterized by pain over the knee cap and or the joint line, typically with activity or climbing up/down stairs. More often than not I find that this one is caused from weakness of the VMO (vastus medialis oblique) muscle. The weakness alters the tracking of the kneecap and results in dysfunction and pain. Again for for this injury, I do recommend a doctor visit to determine the exact cause. However, for VMO strengthening I recommend rehab with: Terminal Knee Extensions & Straight leg raises.
