6 questions to ask yourself Well-being has become a hot button topic in recent years with a whole science developing around the idea. Learning about the dimensions of well-being — no matter what your age — may help you plan for your own future, says Coughlin. • Will your physical health enhance your lifestyle? This is what people think of most often when they consider well-being, often focusing on the costs of insurance, medicines and treating chronic disease. But, another side of this dimension, says Coughlin, is to ask yourself if youll have the physical health youll need to do the things you want to do in retirement, including continuing to work, travel and playing with your grandkids. • Are you embracing healthy behaviors? Eating right, getting enough sleep and keeping chronic conditions such as high blood pressure or cholesterol under control are key. These are the things that will make you feel great now and enable you to stay on the job longer, change careers or start your own business later. Investing in yourself and staying healthy, says Coughlin, is as critical as investing in your retirement. • How is your emotional health? Are you stressed? Did you experience sadness today? Did you smile today? The research shows that people between age 37 and 57 are likely to feel the most stressed and least positive about their emotional health possibly because this is the prime time for work and caring for your children and parents. Its hard to think about the next 20 years when youre not quite sure what youre doing in the next 20 minutes, says Coughlin. • Are you happy in your work environment? After money and income, a positive work environment is the reason most people stay in the workplace. Do you feel respected? Do you feel youre adding value? Men in particular often rely on their work environment to provide purpose and meaning in their lives and a link to social connections, says Coughlin. • Do you have access to basic needs? Can you get health services easily? Do you live close to a place to exercise? Do you feel safe, satisfied and happy with where you live, and will you feel that way in the future? • How do you feel about life today? And, how do you think it will be years from now? Before people reach the age of 50, the stresses of life can put a damper on their attitude about tomorrow. How positive all respondents feel about the other five dimensions also impacts how they feel in this category. But, as weve seen in the 2013 Gallup-Healthways Index, attitudes change for the better with age. Rethinking your future with well-being in mind can help you feel your best about your life now and in the years to come. To Know More visit us @ findmeanadvisor
