6 years ago today, I was in a terrible car accident that left me with a pelvis broken in 3 places. I spent a week in the hospital and another on bedrest at home. The path from wheelchair to walker to hobbling on my own took 2 more months. The limp lasted for another 6. But the human body is amazing. And heal itself it did. My body took itself back to its pre-accident physical limits, and then went beyond them. This year, I ran 385 training miles, (2) 5Ks and a 10K. I hiked the 10 miles of the 4-mile trail (go figure) at Yosemite. I walked from one end of San Francisco to another. I hiked Runyon Canyon. I went snow tubing for the first time ever. I tried Olympic powerlifting and crossfit before discovering a love for Orangetheory Fitness In 2015, I want to double the miles, have new physical experiences, run another half marathon in the spring with an eye on a fall full marathon. And I want my daughter and my son to watch me do it. I want them to understand the joy that the human body can bring with its resilience But mostly I wanted to take the time to thank those who have supported me on this journey: Lee Feagin (my rock and the whole reason this growth has been possible) Gillian Nichole Ribner (my pusher/enabler--2 stubborn competitors, 1 workout. You can do the math, but the results were always hardcore. Andy Booth, Margaret Wenclawiak, and Lee Zwell, who have taught me that working out is way more fun in a group and that you always have a little more in the tank than you think you do. Nicki LeFevre Tzavaras, Jennifer Cheek, Shayzam Gryffindork, Marjorie Windham, Jennifer Graham: my inspirations. I hope I grow up to have your drive and determination one day.
