#6166 I just want to first start out by saying that I can respect the protest at Homecoming. They wanted to call problems to light and they certainly did. Secondly, I didnt think there was anything wrong with the Standard publishing their papers with slurs and curse words. They got their point across. However, what bothers me the most about the protest is that it, in no way to me, is calling for equality. Their shirts read Hope Im not Murdered for being Black today. What about other minorities on campus? There was no support for anyone else. If that protest was all about stopping racism and didnt relate to Ferguson at all, why did their signs say Dont Shoot just like Ferguson rioters? Also, why is how drunk tailgaters yelling at protestors suddenly become all of campus/the complete diversity program/President Smarts opinion? I read in the Standard that one of the protestors wanted a face to face apology from Smart. For what? For tailgaters shouting their drunken opinions with their families? Some of the tailgaters showed support for the protest, but NO ONE mentioned that in the Standard. Not to mention that if youre so offended by being called the n-word, why belittle yourselves by calling yourself as well as your friends that? I feel like its getting to the point that if youre not some apologetic mess and in full support of the protest, you look like a racist. In my opinion, white people arent the only ones who can be racist.
