650 BCE: Assyrians use marijuana for pain relief during childbirth. In the late 19th century archaeologists Sir Henry Layard and Hormuzd Rassam recovered a huge cache of 50,000 stone tablets from King Ashurbanipal’s famous underground library in Nineveh, in present day Iraq. One of these tablets, dating back to the 7th century BCE, has a fragment recording an ancient Assyrian herbal remedy which uses cannabis for “banishing the ghosts of childbirth”.
