6TH MEMORIAL SERVICE OF LATE SENATOR MELFORD OBIENE OKILO: The deputy governor rear admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd} who ably represented the state governor H.E. Henry Seriake Dickson, reading the first lesson at the 6th anniversary of late Senator Melford Obiene Okilo at Bartholomew Anglican Church, Emakalakala, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. He read from the Bible book of Isaiah 43: 1-7. Late Senator Melford Obiene Okilo was the first democratically elected governor of the old Rivers state from 1979-1983, before the military takeover of the government. He served the nation and his people at various capacities. He was also Minister of the federal Republic of Nigeria and served in the Senate meritoriously before his death six years ago. As the governor of the old Rivers state, he established schools in almost all the major towns and villages thereby making education accessible to all, including those who couldnt have afforded training their children outside their environment. He opened up several roads here and there in the state when he was governor, thereby making it easy for movement of humans and goods from the interior to the cities. One other spectacular achievement worthy of mention is the Imiringi Gas turbine which he constructed. This project made it possible for our people in the present day Bayelsa to enjoy free light when it was created out of the old Rivers state in 1996. Then it was the only source of light till recently when the state was connected to the National grid. His death was a great loss to the people of Bayelsa state and the nation in general. We missed him so dearly at a time his fatherly advise is needed. We love you, our visionary leader, Senator {H.E.} Chief Melford Obiene Okilo. Adieu.
