Arun Duggal appointed as non-executive Chairman of Credit rating agency ICRA • Mr. Arun Duggal was appointed as non-executive Chairman of Credit Rating Agency ICRA Limited. He was elected unilaterally by the ICRA Board. Earlier he was serving as an independent director on the Board of ICRA Ltd. He will be succeeding Pranab Kumar Choudhury. • Mr. Arun Duggal is the former Chairman of the non-banking financial company Shriram Capital Ltd. Awards 1. Tim Howard Won Player of The Year 2014 Award • Goalkeeper Tim Howard has won the 2014 Player of the Year award for his work with the U.S. national team. • It is the first time Howard has won the prestigious honor given to a U.S. team member by Futbol de Primera. Banking 1. ICICI Bank sells Russian subsidiary to Sovcombank • The board of country’s largest private sector lender ICICI Bank approved sale of the bank’s shareholding in its Russian subsidiary ICICI Bank Eurasia, to a third party Sovcombank. • ICICI Bank Eurasia accounted for less than 0.1 per cent of ICICI Bank’s consolidated total assets at that date and consolidated profit after tax for the period, the BSE release said. 2. Sukanaya Samridhi account –girl child • Central govt. has come up with a new deposit scheme for the girl child ‘Sukanya Samridhi Account’ a small deposit scheme for girl children to provide for their higher education and marriage.. • Through this scheme the savings account for the children girls can be opened in banks and post offices. • After the completion of age of 10 years of the child, the child can herself operate the account. The scheme is aimed at garnering small savings and channelising them for development of infrastructure. Minimum & Maximum Limits: • An account can be opened with Rs.1,000. It is required to deposit at least Rs.1,000 or more in multiples of Rs.100 every year. If the minimum amount is not deposited, there will be a fine of Rs.50 for every year of defaults. • One can deposit maximum of Rs.1.5 lakh in one financial year. This is the same amount on which tax benefit is available under Section 80C of Income Tax. Withdrawal norms: • The deposit is required to be made for 14 years from the date of opening of account, which will be operated by the parents or legal guardian till the girl child attains the age of 10 years, after which she can operate the account while parents can deposit the money. • Though the account will mature in 21 years from the date of opening of account, one can withdraw half of the balance (at the end of preceding financial year) for higher education and marriage, but only after the girl attains the age of 18 years. The account will be closed if the girl marries before the maturity period. Deaths 1. Belgium’s Former Queen Fabiola Died • Belgium’s former Queen Fabiola, the widow of the Belgium king Baudouin, has died in Brussels. She was 86. • Fabiola became queen of Belgium when she married King Baudouin in 1960. • She remained Queen Consort for 33 years – until Baudoin’s death in 1993. Economy 1. Karnataka offers government services through mobile platform • Karnataka, which exports nearly a third of Indias IT exports, has embarked on a new experiment of offering nearly 637 government services through a mobile platform called Mobile One. • From applying for birth and death certificates, paying utility bills, property registration, to paying taxes and applying for a driving license, the state government says can all now be done on mobile. The app is available on both iOS and Android platforms. • For those using non-smart feature phones a dedicated number (161) has been set apart where they can interact and request services via messages. • The platform was launched in Bangalore by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, who lauded the move. 2. RIL, TCS, others among Barclays top 133 stock picks for 2015 • Reliance Industries, TCS and Bharti Airtel are among the six Indian firms that figure in Barclays top 133 stock picks from across the world for 2015. • Other Indian firms in the list include HDFC Bank, homegrown pharma major Lupin and Voltas. • RIL was the only stock pick in energy segment in Asia, while Bharti and Lupin were the only ones in telecommunication and healthcare segments. International 1. Members of parliament voted Somalias prime minister out of office for the second time in a year; a move Western donor warned would threaten the war-torn nations fragile recovery. • Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed had been embroiled in a row over a Cabinet reshuffle with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who had overruled the changes. • The Prime Minister had been in office for just under a year after his predecessor, who also argued about the composition of the cabinet and been accused of poor performance, was voted out. 2. Britain will broaden its military footprint in the Middle East with the establishment of a permanent military base at the Mina Salman Port in Bahrain. • An agreement on this was signed in Manama by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa. • The naval base will become the springboard for Britain’s involvement in the Middle East, most importantly its operations in Iraq as part of the U.S.-led coalition against the armies of the Islamic State.The U.K. already has four mine-hunter warships permanently based in Bahrain that supports British destroyers and frigates in the Gulf. Shiv Sena joins BJP govt in Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis ministry expanded • Weeks after squabbling over allocation of portfolios, the Shiv Sena finally joined the BJP-led government in Maharashtra, when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expanded his 34-day-old cabinet. • Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao administered the oath of office to 20 ministers, including 10 from BJP. Ten cabinet ministers, five each from BJP and Sena, were sworn in. • Cabinet ministers who took the oath were Girish Bapat (BJP), Girish Mahajan (BJP), Diwakar Raote (Shiv Sena), Subhash Desai (SS), Ramdas Kadam (SS), Eknath Shinde (SS), Chandrashekhar Bawankule (BJP), Babanrao Lonikar (BJP), Dr Deepak Sawant (SS) and Rajkumar Badole (BJP). • Ministers of state sworn in were Ram Shinde (BJP), Vijay Deshmukh (BJP), Sanjay Rathod (Shiv Sena), Dada Bhuse (SS), Vijay Shivtare (SS), Deepak Kesarkar (SS), Raje Amrish Atram (BJP), Ravindra Waikar (SS), Dr Ranjit Patil (BJP) and Pravin Pote (BJP). Narndra Modi named Asian of the Year by Singapores Straits Times • Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi was named as the Asian of the Year 2014 by Singapores leading newspaper The Straits Times. He was named as the Asian of the Year 2014 for being a development-focused leader. • Despite being relatively new to the job, he has already made a mark on Asia, reaching out to neighbours and receiving national leaders including Xi Jinping of China and Tony Abbott of Australia,” said the Singapore Press Holdings Ltd, publisher of the daily. 2. For the post of next defense secretary of US, physicist Ashton Carter nominated • Physicist and Former Harvard professor Ashton Carter was nominated as the next defence secretary of US Department of Defence by President Barack Obama. • He will be replacing Chuck Hagel as US Defence Secretary, who resigned in November 2014. He is supposed to take over the charge in 2015 and will be fourth defence secretary of President Obama in six years. He had been a longtime member of the Defense Science Board and the Defense Policy Board, the principal advisory bodies to the Secretary of Defense of US. Places in news 1. Chennai, Bengaluru join ‘100 Resilient Cities’ network. • Chennai and Bengaluru have joined the ‘100 Resilient Cities’ network, dedicated to helping cities around the world become more resilient to physical, social and economic challenges, for demonstrating a commitment to building their capacities in tackling 21st century issues. • The two Indian cities were chosen among 331 applications from cities around the world for 100RC network, pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, New York. • Each city was asked to present a clear and compelling description of its major challenges and its approach to decrease vulnerabilities. Seminars - Meetings 1. India and Russia signed an Inter-Governmental Agreement for designing, developing and producing the Multi Role Fighter Aircraft. The announcement was made by Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar during the parliamentary session. • Moreover, Indian Fighter aircraft MIG 21 is being phased out and aircrafts MIG 29 are being procured from Russia. With the fifth generation stealth technology, the aircraft strikes would be high as they cannot be immediately detected by radar. • However, no deal has been struck with Russia for procurement of Fighter Aircraft equipped with stealth technology. Till date, no agreement has been signed with any country for the procurement or purchase of fighter aircrafts. Special Days 1. Fifth World Cup Kabaddi from December 6 • The Fifth World Cup Kabaddi is all set to begin from December 6, with as many as 19 teams participating in the men’s and women’s sections. • The opening ceremony will be held at the Guru Gobind Singh Stadium here on Dec 6, Jalandhars Deputy Commissioner KK Yadav informed at a press conference here today. The first match will be played on December 7 in Gurdaspur and the final will be in Badal village on December 20. State 1. Govt appoints Dinesh Kumar as CEO of Polavaram Project • Senior IAS officer Dinesh Kumar was today appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the Polavaram Project Authority. • Kumar, a 1983 batch IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, is currently working as Development Commissioner in the Ministry of Textiles.
