7/12/2013 Friday in the desert Today was a very good day. Lotan was visited by 53 teenagers from a camp in New Hampshire. They were mostly from Massachusetts and they brought great energy to the pool area this afternoon before they got back on their bus and headed elsewhere. It was an excellent day for the teenagers to be in Southern Israel and specifically at the Lotan pool. The air was warm, the wind was quiet so that you could see the Edom Mountains all day and the water was 70 degrees so you could stay in it and never feel cold. It’s nice having teenagers visit and it’s also nice when the teenagers leave and the pool area is quiet and peaceful. Tonight was also very nice. When the sun went down the air cooled slightly and the weather was balmy. It felt like we were on a beach in the tropics as the palms swayed in the early evening breeze and the kibbutzniks and visitors gathered at the Community Center for the Oneg Shabbat. I was able to get to the sweet table before the onslaught of the kibbutz children and got away with two, that’s right, two pieces of chocolate cake! Then, while sipping my tea and eating my cake I was joined on the settee by Daniel, one of the two rabbis that live on the kibbutz and he turns out to be a Grateful Dead fan, a true deadhead who knows their music, their history and the names of the members of the band! I love nothing more than to regale a real deadhead with my story of meeting the Dead and sitting on the stage with them at a concert in Detroit in the early 1970s. On my way home from the Oneg shabbat, the wind picked up and cooled the kibbutz down for some good sleeping. The Arava is a great place to live and I’m glad it’s in Israel. What a country! Laila Tov.
