7/12/2014. ॐ श्रीपरमात्मने नमः । THE PROOF THAT YOU ARE UNDER SWOON. King Janak was great sage, too. He once asks Great Sage and Seer Ashtavakra: How knowledge is attained, how non-attachment is attained and how Liberation is attained. First two questions are procedures; the last one is result of those procedures. If knowledge is attained, it will certainly lead to nonattachment. And nonattachment will lead to Liberation. What is knowledge? Knowledge means the eradication of ignorance. What is our ignorance? Our ignorance is to believe that we are awake, to believe that we are not fast asleep, and to believe that we are not under swoon. When our ignorance goes and we imbibe that we are fast asleep, that we are under swoon, the efforts to awake ourselves will soon start. If you know that you have some disease, then immediately you consult some doctor, and start taking remedial steps. But if you believe that you are hale and hearty, you feel not obliged to consult the doctor and treatment will never start. Same way if you somehow imbibe that you are fast asleep, that you are under swoon, you will immediately reach out to some master to awake you. The master will diagnosis and tell you to practise non attachment. And nonattachment will lead you to Liberation. Our concern is the Liberation. The subject we are discussing is how we can attain the permanent Awareness. How we can leave the sleep, the swoon. Ashtavakra replies: मुक्तिमिच्छसि चेत्तात्, विषयान विषवत्त्यज। क्षमार्जवदयातोष, सत्यं पीयूषवद्भज॥१-२॥ - If you wish to attain liberation, give up the passions (desires for sense gratification) as you give up poison and try to inculcate in life forgiveness, simplicity, compassion, contentment and truth in the way as you inculcate nectar in life.॥ Ashtavakra Gita-1/2॥. Very simple procedure is laid down by Sage Ashtavakra. He says leave the objects of sense gratification as you leave poison and accept qualities in life as you accept nectar. We are doing quite opposite. We are accepting objects of sense gratification as we accept nectar and leaving the qualities as we leave the poison. There is no our enemy on earth greater than us. Krishna in Gita rightly says: आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्घुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मन:।। (Gita-6/5). Person himself is his friend and enemy, too. I think it is conclusive proof of our being fast asleep, and of our being under swoon, if we take poison at a time where nectar was available to be taken by us. You must have noticed that when you are involved deeply in some subject, you don’t even notice what takes place in and around you. You don’t notice who passes before your eyes. If they meet you later and say that you had not responded to their greetings that time, you simply say that your attention was not on them. So main thing is your attention. Your eye can see a thing before it if your attention is on it, otherwise not. In other words you can say that the subject implied upon you the mesmerisation and you went under swoon due to that. And this resulted in you run behind the subjects. Your run behind the subjects have placed you under swoon and you react as if you are fast asleep. You lose all discernment. You take poison in lieu of nectar. This is the greatest swoon. When you are under sleep during night you react same way, you can’t notice what takes place in and around you. So we can safely conclude that our blind run behind the subjects has resulted in our state that we behave as if we are fast asleep. हरिः ॐ तत् सत् ।
