Depravity is not being as bad as you can be but as bad off as you can be—without Jesus. ~ The Summary Question Q: Are we better than they? A: No—the Great Physician’s diagnosis of the condition of humanity is bleak: All are sinners without exception. An Autopsy of Depravity 1. We are all sinners by character. (vv. 9-12) STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 3:9–12, HCSB - 9 What then? [Lit., What is the point? And here is the question.] Are we any better [This translates one word in the Gk. do we have a better basic nature than those who have just been shown to be condemned—in Ch’s 1-2]? [Here is the answer.] Not at all! For we have previously charged that both Jews and Gentiles are all under [the control of] sin, 10 as it is written [in the OT is a series of different passages]: There is no one righteous, not even one. 11 There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away [lit., bend away]; all alike have become useless. There is no one who does what is good, not even one. A. It touches every race. “….we….they…” B. It touches every religion. “…Jew and Gentile…” C. It tarnishes all righteousness “…no one righteous, not even one.” 2. We are all sinners by conduct. (vv. 13-18) STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 3:13–18, HCSB - 13 Their throat is an open grave [All graves would be sealed in that day—just like today]; they deceive with their tongues. Vipers’ venom [lit., Asp—an Egyptian cobra, has a small sac of deadly poison in its mouth which can have a devastating, paralyzing effect of the victim it bites—just like our spoken words can] is under their lips. 14 Their mouth is full of cursing [not “cussing” but “cursing”—I call it the curse of words] and bitterness [this Gk. word does not refer to taste—it describes openly expressed emotional hostility against an enemy—in this case, Holy God]. 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 ruin and wretchedness are in their paths, 17 and the path of peace they have not known. 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. A. It tarnishes our speech. “…rotting corpse…lies…deception...poison... devastating power.” B. It tarnishes our steps. ”…shed blood…brutal…without peace.” C. It tarnishes our sight. We don’t see clearly our need to “…fear God…” any longer. 3. We are all sinners under condemnation. (vv. 19-20) STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 3:19–20, HCSB - 19 Now we know [Gk. oida, refers to knowledge that is certain and complete] that whatever the law says speaks to those who are subject to the law, so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God’s judgment. 20 For no one will be justified in His sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law. A. Our sin is declared by the law. “… the law speaks…” B. Our sin is damned by the law. “…no one will be justified in His sight by the works of the law….” Life Application Section: “What is the biblical prescription for sin?” 1 John 1:9, NIV84 - 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. A. We must confess our sins before Holy God. B. We must repent of our wrong-doing. C. We must make it right, if we can. D. We must receive God’s forgiveness. E. We must forgive ourselves and/or others. The height of Spiritual maturity is forgiveness.
