7/21/14 Once again our work week began early. Volunteers arrived on Monday as our spur contractor began laying forms for the concrete rail crossings. The originals were removed to facilitate the removal of the old ties and excavate the ground below. Forms were completed Tuesday then the concrete was poured on Thursday. Some forms were removed Saturday. The remaining ones should be removed Monday. On our regular work days this week were spent relaying crossing ties used for vehicle and personal movements. Some were bolted down to the new ties below and the cracks were filled with recycled concrete and sand. In the machine shop various items were being fabricated for the cylinder hone and the crosshead tramming device. Assembly of the power head for the cylinder hone was completed. Drive shaft parts are now being machined. Pete O. returned from an extended break and began preparing more small parts for painting. Welcome back Pete! Mountain View Elementary School had asked if they could get someone to come speak to them about our locomotive. So, we sent our Community Liaison, Steve B., to fill that request. He then got them so interested that on Friday 59 kids and parents/grand parents (one being Pete O.) were at the site asking so many questions, Steve was exhausted by the end of about three hours. They had a great time seeing and learning about the locomotive and its power. They took off for a picnic at the park after they left. Maybe well get some railroaders out of that group someday. Thanks to Steve for making that all happen for those youngsters along with their principal and teachers. A new member orientation was conducted Saturday. Three persons participated in that. Jeff W., Larry L. and Colin Mc. were the victims for Jons class this time. Jeff was not new, but he had to take the orientation this year. Welcome to all of you and welcome back Jeff.
