Mathis “New Prairie Rides Out a Winner” Plymouth, Indiana – The only thing missing were the cowboy hats as New Prairie’s Magnificent Seven Seniors plus one junior and 2 very talented sophomores rode out of town with the Plymouth Power Ball championship trophy and a 10-0 spotless record with a 25-8, 25-23 victory over the home team Pilgrims… The second and deciding game was 10 minutes longer than the first’s 17 minute drubbing as the Pilgrims served notice they would not be routed by their vaunted foe… The 5:41 local time start had NP MA # 12 Ashlynn Smith busting a 2 ball set for the first point and it was game on…P countered with a super dig which ended up in their 1st point… A little sloppy as NP free balls to zone 2 for a digit before P counters for tie score 2… Warming up, the Cougars score 7 in a row: Rehlander tip; PE P; Rehlander ace; Vogeler solo block; P PE brings a P TO; Another SB by Vogeler; another P PE… score NP 9-2 P scored 3 of the next 4 on a NP HE; P K by Eveland; P ace by Quissell… score NP by 10-5… 3 more by NP on Rehlander free ball over which drops; Smith solo block; freshman DS Jen Ritchie ace… P K by junior Hunter Stevens on a back one; back to back Cougar kills by Cassidy Sensow and Rehlander… Plymouth is on the wrong side of the sideout game as NP is up 15-6… P K Poczik; NP K by Smith; P K by Eveland off the block… Rat tat tat, rat tat tat, rat tat tat, tat as the Cougars dominate play with 9 successive points including back to back slams by Ferrell from the right side; Rehlander also picks up 3 kills in the skein and Vogeler gets another block… NP 25-8 in 17 minutes… --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Would it be cruise control? Not in the Pilgrim gym… P opens the scoring with a transition tip by Poscik tip to one zone off a Harrell beautiful jump set… NP Smith counters with a SB; Finally a 2 block by P stops a NP attack as P takes their first lead in game 2…. P K – Quissell on a roll shot; P K by Stevens: Plymouth up 4-2… NP ties the score on a P digging error followed by a most exciting play as NP Vogeler records a one handed “kong” block straight down… excitement reigns… P fights back for 3: Quissell SB; NP SE; scramble play… NP comes back with their own block; Catherine Ament records an ace… P up by a single before NP setter backs into the net… Again, it’s sophomore RS Ferrell with an extremely strong attack; P setter in the net on a too tight pass… Pilgrims pride scores 4 in a row: Fast improving Portteus keeps the middle Harrell jump set in front of her body and hits the combeback shot towards the server’s corner for a point on transition; NP setter in the net; beautiful left handed dump by Harrell; Eveland block… Great sales job by middle back attacker Rehlander: As the P block goes up, Rehlander puts the soft tip at the 10 foot line from the back row… P records the next 2: K Eveland; NP HE. Score: Plymouth 14-9… Back to back NP Kills: Rehlander; Smith… 15th point for the Pilgrims on a NP BE… P edges forward to 17 on a plethora of NP errors. Score P 17-16… P moves to 19-16 on a Portteus MA K turn to 1 zone… Combined with a P lift call, it’s the turning point according to Coach Campbell as Ferrell scores 2 in a row. Tie score 19… A little controversy after a Portteus kill as the refs miss what appears to be an obvious net and a NP HE makes it 22-19 Pilgrims… NP fires back with 5 unanswered including right sider Ferrell running the x play to crush the ball past a 1 up block in the middle; broad jumping Sensow picks up another K; a tip off the block; Smith MA K; NP B by Sensow = Match point… Harrell records a block to bring Plymouth to within one down 24-23… Final point goes to NP Smith on a 2 up block tip to the Plymouth left front… NP 25-23 in 27 minutes… ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Veteran New Prairie Coach Troy Campbell complimented the Pilgrims for their scrappy play: “Plymouth has a different style of play.” Coach continued that the Pilgrim style of play was hard to defend. He commented that the turning point in the match was sophomore Jessie Ferrell hitting back to back line shots and an x2 play where she comes around from the right side and swings out of the middle… After graduating from Ball State University’s Mens Volleyball Program, Plymouth head man Doug West brought back a struggling Indiana University team before moving on to a different field… Coach West was happy with the showing of his young Pilgrims who found a way to get to the finals after losing an opening match to Highland… Coach West’s roadmap for the future will include ball handling improvement and finding a way to terminating long rallies This was a great display of America’s game – Volleyball Forever!12:43 AM 30 August 2013 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sidebars 3A # 6 Mishawaka Marian’s lost a 10:00 a.m. Saturday match against defending 4A #1 (25-23, 25-19) Carmel in the ever tough Mishawaka Invitational tournament at John Young Middle School. Marian knocked off 4A # 4 Indianapolis Cathedral and local rival Elkhart Memorial, both in 2… In the opposing pool is the host school Mishawaka, Lafayette Harrison, South Bend St. Joe and South Bend Clay… The best records in each pool will meet for the championship @ 4 p.m. Carmel beat South Bend St. Joe to win the Championship 15-15, 25-16… Marian’s outstanding 6’3” Middle Attacker/Blocker Elizabeth Asdell suffered a severely sprained ankle in the 3rd vs 4th place match against Lafayette Harrison… According to Assistant Coach Steve Anderson, Asdell could be out a week or two jeopardizing her ability to play in the 7 September home match against New Prairie for Northwest Indiana 3A superiority on Tuesday 10 September… The upcoming Tuesday 10 September Marian Home match against New Prairie has drawn such HUGE interest that one PENN parent told this reporter she is glad they are off so everyone can see the match… For only the 2nd time in Head Coach Dave Shondell’s 11 years at Purdue the # 13 Boilermakers will meet the # 39 Fighting Irish at 6 p.m. on Saturday 7 September at 6 p.m. in the Golden Dome Invitational… The Boilermakers will play POLAND Friday 9/6 at 4:30 p.m. and Bowling Green at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday 9/8. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Observations: # 1 – New Prairie: A truly balanced bunch whose composure is led by 4 year senior starter Allie Ritchie dishing the rock… A key offensive option is # 3 OA Janelle Rehlander with a supporting cast of many… Added to the aforementioned group was Sophomore Jessie Ferrell was one of 3 MVPs… # 2 – Plymouth: After losing the first match of the day to Highland, Plymouth listened to their Head Coach Doug West who predicted good things could happen if the Pilgrims just kept playing… Sure enough, Coach West was right as 3 teams split 2-1 records with the Pilgrims getting the nod to play for the brass ring… Exciting junior setter Haley Harrell set a fire which almost burned down all opponents from that point on… One of three Team MVPs, Harrell was aided by Hunter Stevens and Emily Eveland, while Krush Volleyball club player Lacy Poczik made quite a few plays as did # 5 Libbie Portteus in the Middle… # 3 – Penn: Penn lost the ultimate fighting slugfest to New Prairie in the group of death 15-12… Senior single setter Alayna Wozniak did a nice job, as she got the ball to 2 junior left side attackers, #11 Cassidy Meiss and # 8 Sarah Ross… Ross had great attacking skills exhibiting both the thumb down (cut shot) and thumb up (comeback shot), but drawing the middle blockers and fueling the engine was the jump setting Wozniak…. # 4 – Southwood: Head Coach Tom Finnicle’s group had a fine tourney showing… # 5 Lake Central: After an exciting club career for John Trojaniak, Lake Central Head Coach Tina Tinberg matriculated to the University of Colorado… Is it any wonder why she founded the Ignite Volleyball Club? Is it any wonder that daughters Taylor (Libero) and Danielle (setter) are contributing mightily to the Lake Central program? Rhymes with fire, sophomore Gardenhire was a dependable hitter… # 6 Muncie Burris: What beautiful volleyball technique is displayed by the Burris Owl group, now three years removed from their legendary Head Coach Steve Shondell… New Head Coach John Rodriguez is a volleyball lifer and should put some spark in the Owl nest… # 7 Valparaiso: Valpo lost all three pool matches to Penn, Lake Central and New Prairie in the “pool of death”, but sports an all star cast of college recruits led by senior 2nd year move-in Noelle Eveland (Northern Michigan) and 6 foot sisters Bontrager, Kate (junior) and Rachel (freshman)… 6’2” sophomore Annie Clark and junior Timi Stiscak anchor the middle… However, the piece de resistance might be two jump setting setters in a 6-2 attack, 6 foot sophomore Dani Suiter and 6’1 left handed Monroe Olsen… # 8 Highland: Coach Matt Clark’s team had their moments in a fine tourney showing…. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- College time: The New Prairie Cougars had outstanding ball control from Catherine Ament who will be going to Valparaiso University on scholarship next fall… Serving and back row specialist Breanna Wisser will move on to Goshen College next fall… Valparaiso’s Noelle Eveland moves on to Northern Michigan… Vertical Jump: One wag at courtside suggested that New Prairie’s track start turned volleyballer Allie Vogeler had the highest touch on both courts… Club VolleyBall: The Dunes Volleyball Club (Dunes.org) appeared to have the most club players, followed by NIVA (Elkhart), Plymouth Volleyball Club, Outpost (Mishawaka), Krush (Niles), and Ignite (Crown Point)… Stats New Prairie Plymouth Kills Rehlander 8 Stevens 3 Ferrell 7 Portteus 2 Smith 6 Vogeler 5 Digs Ament (L) 8 Smith (L) 13 Rehlander 9 Poczik 3 Blocks Vogeler 6 Sensow 5 Assists A Ritchie 25 Harrell 13 Aces Ament 2
