7 April 1578: Settlement between William Clopton (now master of Kentwell) and Agnes Clopton (widow of the late Francis) Article of Agreement made the vijth day of Aprill 1578 - in the xxth yeare of the Queenes Maiesties Reigne between William Clopton Esq and Mistress Annis Clopton late wife of Francis Clopton of Kentwell Esq deceased of and for all such Moveabble goodes & Chattells as weare the said Franciss Imprimis it is agreed between the sayd parties that all the sayd goodes and chattells shalbe equally devided between the sayd parties, savinge that the sayd Annis shall choose or take owt one fetherbed iij payer of sheetes one payer of fustian blanqete one coverlet or Testor to the same and a payer of yelow socce & garter and restoringe to the sayd William all such grayne as is sowen this yeare --- all hid brothers Apparell and furniture and one Testor of Cryson satten and velvet & Curteyns to the same Further it is agreed between the seyd parties that the seyd William shall paye unto the said Annis duringe the terme of the yeares unexpired of Downehall Lease lxxxvj li xiijs iiijd yf she the said Annis shall so long live -- (at two equal portions paid at Michelmas and Lady day) and at the expiracon of the said lease of Downehall to make up the said lxxxvj li xiijs iiijd to the summe of one C li to be payd yearly duringe the life of the said Annis in mannor and forme aforesaid. A Reocognistion of one Md to be knowledged by the seyd William unto the said Annis for the payement of the soomes of money yearly to be payed to the said Anniss as is above said --- and to be taken by the Advise of hir learned counsell --- the lawe within the space of two months next coming.
