7, JANUARY 1994… 21 YEARS AGO today my grandfather, Webster Harold Dessecker passed away peacefully in his bed with my mother watching over him. As most grandfathers go he was a great man. Raising his family thru the depression era he owned a Pure Oil gasoline filling station. Working from early morning to late evening his 3 girls and his wife were properly cared for. Certainly far from well off, none the less, they never missed a meal or went without the basics. My mother remembered than he would come home at 5pm sharp for dinner only to very soon return to the station until closing around 10pm. Times were different when I grew up in the sixties. Nearly EVERY Sunday week after week for more than 18 years my brothers my self and parents would make the trek to 1392 Wilson Lane for an all day visit. The men played Eucher in the basement nearly all sunday for all those years. The gathering was a family affair with aunts, uncles and cousins never missing a Sunday!!!!! I realize anyone reading this eulogy couldnt care less, and, Im good with that. I make notes of this today as a written refection of a life that used to be, a relationship that use to be. I stop out to the Copley cemetery once a year, not for him, hes not there. I stop, as a brief moment: to refect on a past I cannot have back if even for a second. Upon going through his possessions after the wake, I acquired a nearly full bottle of his only cologne: Old Spice. Starting on the first anniversary of his death to the present, I have splashed some on as a vivid mental reminder of my grandfather, never until now sharing this obscure ritual with anyone. So for you grandpa, today I will honour my personal memories of you yet again…… for the 21st time Ill be wearing Old Spice from the very bottle that was yours!!!!
