7 Qualifications of an Acupuncturist Extraordinaire You finally decided to get acupuncture for those ailments that have been plaguing you, but when you google “Acupuncture St Paul” so many people come up that it’s hard to choose who will be right for you, right?! We feel your pain! So we’ve compiled a list of what truly makes an Acupuncturist Extraordinaire: 1. They have their Masters of Oriental Medicine. This means they’ve gone through 3000+ hours of classroom and lab work (that’s 3 years of training…that’s a lot!!) and really know their stuff! 2. They are board certified in acupuncture by NCCAOM, the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. To be board certified they’ve had at least 3 board exams testing their skills in Chinese medicine theory, acupuncture, and Western medicine. 3. They are licensed in acupuncture by the MN Board of Medical Practice. Once all their course work is done, and their board exams are taken, they are eligible to become licensed by the state based on many requirements. Not all states require licensure to practice acupuncture, but good ol’ MN does! Look for the designation L.Ac., or licensed acupuncturist. 4. They’re board certified in Chinese herbal medicine. Minnesota doesn’t require a license of any kind to practice herbs, so how do you know your practitioner knows their stuff? They’re a Diplomate of Chinese Herbology/Oriental Medicine, that’s how. That means they’ve studied herbs for hundreds of hours (including at least 400 individual herbs and 400 herbal formulas in the Materia Medica) and passed a rigorous NCCAOM board exam. Phew – it’s exhausting just thinking about all the studying required for those exams! 5. They can talk to you about food. Food is medicine that you take every day, so if you want to heal yourself, look for experts in food therapy to point you in the right direction. 6. They have a specialty! Oriental medicine is holistic and can help a wide variety of conditions, but you want someone who can help your specific condition. Most of you already know that if you have a digestive issue you should see Senia, and if you have something related to woman’s health you always go to Alicia. Finding out what specialties the acupuncturists in your area have will help you decide whom to pick! 7. And last, but certainly not least, they *care* about you! You know right away whether the person you’re talking to on the phone for a consult really and truly cares about you and loves what they do. They are engaging, sincere, polite, and answer all your questions! You’ll work with your Acupuncturist Extraordinaire for quite some time as you heal, so you want a good rapport.
