7 basic measurement steps by The NonProfit Times - September 16, 2013 Beth Kanter and Katie Delahaye Paine, authors of the book “Measuring the Networked Nonprofit,” know that you don’t need a Ph.D. from prestigious university to measure your networked nonprofit accurately. That doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t basic rules to follow. No matter what kind of program or campaign you are running — an event, a Facebook page, or a donor outreach program — there are seven basic steps for doing good measurement and getting actionable results. So the next time you think about using some unproven technique to measure your successes, take a step back and follow the steps laid out in Paine’s book “Measure What Matters.” • Define your goals. What do you want to change? What outcomes is this strategy or tactic going to achieve? What are your measurable objectives? • Define your audiences. Who are you trying to reach? How do your efforts connect with those audiences to achieve your goals? • Define your benchmarks. Who or what are you going to compare your results to? • Define your metrics. What are the key performance indicators that you will use to judge your progress towards goals? • Define your time and costs. What is your investment? • Select your data and collection tools. What applications or systems are you going to use to collect your data? • Collect your data, analyze it, turn what you have learned into action, and start to measure again.
