7 things you probably dont know about me: 1. Growing up, I used to knock on people’s doors as early as 9am to talk about the Bible & Armageddon. Yes, I was raised a Jehovah’s Witness. Don’t hate me! 2. I lived in Mexico for 2 summers after HS, attended a Spanish speaking congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses & taught the Bible while attending the Academia Hispano Americana. That’s pretty much how I learned Spanish. Immersion. Then, I taught Spanish at a private elementary school & subbed at my old Jr. High School. 3. My dance background is Classical ballet. I grew up in the Amherst Ballet Theater Co. & trained at Dance Theater of Harlem & Alvin Ailey during the summer. I gave up my religion & classical ballet at age 23 when I booked my first gig as a backup dancer for Freedom Williams from C&C Music Factory. Our 1st show was on BET where my religious mom witnessed her classically trained daughter hump the floor on national TV. Proud moment, indeed. 4. When I was young, I always wanted a nickname like Taco or Cookie but my friends insisted on calling me Kira. BORING. Finally, a friend started calling me Keex in my mid-20s & it caught on. Somehow I think it fits me better than Taco or Cookie. 5. Favorite Gigs: Off-B-way’s “De La Guarda” & “Fuerza Bruta”. Doubling for Mel B (Scary Spice) during the rehearsal process of the Spice Girl’s reunion tour. Dancing on tour with Gloria Estefan. (Besides Missy Elliot, she was my favorite artist to work with.) 6. I’ve injured every joint in my body. (HEAD) Concussion (SHOULDER) labral tear, bicipital tendinits, impingement syndrome, bursitis. (ELBOW) medial & lateral epicondylitis (SPINE/PELVIS) herniated L5-S1 + SI joint dysfunction (KNEE) torn meniscus (ANKLES) 3 sprains each. If it wasnt for PT, massage, Pilates & acupuncture, I never wouldve had a 20yr career as a dancer/aerialist. I think this is why Im such a passionate bodyworker; especially when it comes to dancers/athletes. 7. What I love to sing in the shower: anything from the musical Annie, “All Night Long” by the Mary Jane Girls, “Ain’t Nobody Loves Me Better” by Chaka Kahn. And, damn, I sound good! Now the deal is, if you comment on this post, I give you a number 1-10 and you post as many things that we probably dont know about you.
