714 devotional... WARNINGS MATTER Read Zephaniah 1:1 through 3:20 Marie’s doctor had warned her for years. If she didn’t change her eating habits, her health would suffer. While sharing a bowl of potato chips with a friend, Marie complained, “I have to start giving myself insulin shots and take blood-pressure pills. Now I have a pinched nerve in my back that could require surgery.” Why do so many people ignore warnings and so few heed good counsel? As Marie’s weight climbed, her doctor continued warning her of the dangers. He explained how exercise could alleviate several of her health issues. At age fifty-four, the results of poor food choices and a sedentary lifestyle had finally materialized. “At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, ‘The Lord will do nothing, either good or bad’” (Zephaniah 1:12). Warnings matter. They come as wise words to protect against harmful outcomes. To refuse wisdom and think nothing bad will happen is foolish. Poor choices eventually bring poor consequences.
