73 years ago today on Dec. 11, 1941 Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy declared war on the U.S., four days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Mired in a vicious war with the Soviet Union, Adolf Hitlers declaration of war on America flew in the face of common sense. Or did it? Not to Hitler. He was fed up with the attacks made by Roosevelt on him and on Nazism, writes William Shirer in The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich, his patience was exhausted by the warlike acts of the U.S. Navy against German U-boats in the Atlantic, about which (German Head Admiral) Raeder had continually nagged him for nearly a year. He had a growing hatred for America and Americans and, what was worse for him in the long run, a growing tendency to disastrously underestimate the potential strength of the United States. Shirer noted that Hitler told aides a month later on Jan. 7, 1942: I dont see much future for the Americans. Its a decayed country. And they have their racial problem and the problem of social inequalities ... My feelings against Americanism are feelings of hatred and deep repugnance ... Everything about the behavior of American society reveals that its half Judaized and the other half Negrified. How can one expect a State like that to hold together -- a country where everything is built on the dollar? Within four years, both Hitler and Mussolini were dead, their brands of fanaticism consigned to the ash heap of history. ihr.org/jhr/v08/v08p389_Hitler.html
