75% or 66 two thirds Majority Ruling: Much Ado About Nothing. Other than some insatiable urge to hug the limelight, no one should become overly enamoured with overflogging this controversy of 66 two thirds versus 75 percent as basis for majority ruling in some matters at the conference. There is nothing sacrosanct about 66 two thirds to make 75 percent begin to sound sacrilegious. Both statistics are designed to reflect and respect the wishes of majority of Nigerians and 75 percent says it louder than 66 two thirds. In democracies, the axiom is that minority will have its say and majority its way. There are situations that will stiill follow the simple-majority prescription while others considered more crucial to Nigerians will have to scale the higher bar of 75 percent. The latter says it louder than 66 two thirds. Those who preferentially recommended consensus or 75 percent to the president on certain matters did their homework and the prescription should stay. Nigeria does not have to ape the West in everything to forge an ideal pathway to a desired socio-political arrangement. The 75 percent v 66 two thirds controversy is much ado about nothing. The gathering should invest its energies on issues substantive to Nigerians, not fall prey to accidental or deliberate efforts at grandstanding.
