75 year old suspect nabbed in Thyolo private parts cutting case Thyolo, January 12: Police in Thyolo are keeping in custody 75 year old Sabston Folija of Shala village for allegedly cutting off private parts of Tendai Malunga of Beula village in the area of Traditional Authority Kapichi in the district. The accused person earlier reported to police that he accommodated the victim in his house but was not aware that he (the victim) was attacked. But Thyolo police officer in-charge, deputy commissioner Josiah Kanthiti said they arrested Folija because he was the prime suspect. “Our preliminary investigations gave us a clue which led to the arrest of Folija. Officers who were sent to his house found some blood on the mat where both the accused and the victim slept,” said Kanthiti. Kanthiti added that during interrogation, Folija admitted to have shared a mat with the victim who was in good health, but argued that he had no knowledge about the incident. Malunga, who is slowly recovering at Thyolo district hospital, told MANA that on January 1, that he departed Mozambique at around 12 noon and headed to his home village (Beula) where he wanted to spend the New Years day with his family. Upon reaching Ruo River, the boundary between Mulanje and Thyolo districts, Malunga said he boarded a boat which later capsized because of the bad weather but managed to swim and eventually crossed the river. “I then arrived at Makapwa village at around 7; 00 pm where I met a friend identified as a Mr. Sailesi who borrowed me some clothes (since mine were wet) and offered me food,” he explained. With tears in his eyes, Malunga narrated that he then left for Khave village and arrived late at night. He then went to Folija’s house who is area chairman to seek accommodation. “Since it was late, I decided to look for a place to sleep before proceeding my journey the following morning. I went to Folija’s house because I knew him personally as I have been in the area for 17 years. He welcomed me and offered me a place to sleep.” “Folija and I slept together on his mat at his bedroom. I didn’t know where his wife and children slept because I already found them asleep. However, what happened thereafter i cannot remember since I realized that I was in hospital with my entire private parts sliced and I had a deep cut on my neck,” lamented Malunga. Meanwhile,Folija has been charged with grievous harm which is contrary to section 238 of the penal code.
