This year’s conference will be co-organized with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Nucleo Milenio INTELIS, the Universidad Adolfo Ibañez (UAI) and the Instituto Nacional de Propiedad Industrial (INAPI) of Chile. The aim of this conference is to bring together researchers from around the world to discuss the importance of innovation for economic development and growth. This year we would like to emphasize research on novel collaborative approaches to research and innovation, and the role of intellectual property rights (IPRs) in innovation strategies and economic performance. Collaborative links –cross-sector (public-private), intra-sector (value chains) cross-industries and geographical (local and international) are nowadays a fundamental piece of innovation strategies in both public and private organizations. They are increasingly important innovation strategies in developing countries and in many cases deemed essential to accomplish certain research and innovation agendas. Collaborative approaches are also considered to be important for the emergence of New Technology Based Firms (NTBF). The Conference will also welcome studies that evaluate the effects of IPRs systems on firm innovation and economic performance; the different channels through which IPRs can enhance (or hinder) firms’ economic competences; strategies to protect innovation -formal and informal-; and the role of IPRs in public research organizations and universities. Priority will be given to empirical studies that are devoted to developing countries and that are based on micro data, such as innovation surveys, R&D surveys, firm and household surveys, patents, publications, or research grants. There is also room for methodological and theoretical papers as well as for evidence from case studies. Examples of topics to be covered are: Innovation, Collaborative Approaches and New Technology Based Firms Innovation strategies (internal and external acquisition of knowledge and technology), the role of collaborative links (local and global), and open innovation practices Productivity effects of innovation: R&D and non-R&D innovation investments, collaborative R&D and non-R&D activities Non-technological innovations –drivers, adoption, public policy, performance effects Innovation and scientific diaspora links International knowledge linkages –foreign direct investment, joint ventures, technology licensing and R&D consortiums or joint labs- and firm innovation Innovation and technology transfer in universities and public institutions Innovation and public-private R&D consortiums Innovation and public goods -education, health, human capital, and social capital Innovation and employment effects –skilled and non-skilled effects, large firms and SMEs Innovation investment, access to finance and the role of financial institutions Research and innovation policy –impact evaluations Innovation and technology extension services –agriculture, manufacturing, services. The proposals should explain motivation of the study, framework, methodology and data employed, and preliminary results. Please submit using the submission form online.
