7th July 1917 - Frederick Youens was awarded a VC for an act of extremely bravely. He was a temporary second lieutenant with the Durham light infantry near hill 60 in Belgium. Hearing that Germans were to raid their trenches, he rallied together some men to meet the threat. As he did so, a bomb fell in the trench. He picked it up and threw it over the parapet, an act which perhaps was based in pure instinct. Unfortunately a second bomb fell near the same spot and as he picked it up, it exploded in his hand and the injuries would later kill him. (ES) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Youens
