7th Oct.–18th Oct.’14: Debut Solo Exhibition by Mamata Mondkar Shingade Sentimentality, nostalgia, and illustration are the common pitfalls for a figurative painter undertaking to represent feeling and emotion particularly, when the imagery is invented and not photo derived. Mamata dabbles in a very common, everyday subject - the predicament of the Indian woman as she bids to her calling. Characterized by intricate pattern, her women are clad in simple but intricately patterned garments that lend to the overall decorative appeal of the paintings. Because of the added implications in the way faces can signify feelings, the range of emotions depicted is broader, the ambiguities more enticing, and the questions to be asked more probing. The very sympathy that these paintings elicit is what makes them so fresh. To her younger viewers Mamata offers the hope that painting can become a tool for understanding their relationship to the world. The artist shows a lot of promise in her debut solo showing.
