8/9/2013 Erev Shabbat on Lotan Tonight the Shabbat Dinner was special. We had many guests attending including a Muslim family and the dining hall was packed. The dinner was barbequed chicken, rice, vegetables and a vegetarian dish with a wonderful sauce. Grape juice and ice water is served for those who don’t drink wine, like me. Afterwards there were cakes and pies and teas of all kinds served at the Oneg Shabbat which is always in the community center across from the dining hall. Solly and Evie found new friends among the visitors’ children and played outside until 9:30 pm. This afternoon at the pool, I met two new volunteers, Mateya from Achen, Germany and Sasha from Johannesburg, South Africa. Sasha is a bungee jumping, skydiving and motorcycle enthusiast who has swum in cages with sharks and crocodiles and has a desire to join the IDF. But she is 27 and is probably not age eligible. Mateyah looks like the late movie star Romy Schneider and volunteered so that she could live in Israel, rather than just be a tourist. and thereby really get to know the country and the people. They will be fun to get to know and watch as they experience Israel. Tonight for the first time in many years I could see the milky way clearly. We are looking up at the stars all the time here at night because the sky is so clear and the stars are so bright. I haven’t see the milky way so clearly since I was a child. There are only three days left until the Perseid meteor shower and we are going to watch it from Timna Park, the site of King Solomon’s copper mine’s, which is about 20 miles south of Lotan on Highway 90. It is a big tourist area and there will be telescopes supposedly and other enticements for tourists to watch the meteor shower there that night. We will probably find a secluded spot and just lie in the grass on blankets to enjoy the show. I don’t know how you can see a shooting star with a telescope as it flies by so quickly. The excitement is mounting! Laila Tov.
