8 November 1973: Francis H. McCaughey, 35-year-old Catholic civilian, and a farmer was from Glassdrummond, Aughnacloy. On 28th October Mr McCaughey suffered injuries in a UVF bomb explosion that went off in a byre. He died from those injuries on this day. Mr McCaughey went at 7:45AM to do milking at a farm just down the road from his home. His brother was on the way to help him when he heard a loud explosion. He found his brother badly injured at the door of the dairy. The BBC received a call claiming the Aughnacloy UFF was responsible for the murder. They said Mr McCaugheys death was in retaliation for the killing of Mr Franklin Caddoo, a UDR man who was shot in the area. However, reliable loyalist sources said the UVF was responsible for the murder. The inquest was told that the booby trap bomb was most likely intended for soldiers. The inquest jury was told by a barrister for the Northern Ireland Office you may feel this was probably a booby-trap set up for soldiers who would be searching buildings such as this. Unfortunately, this perfectly innocent young man met his death in this way. LEST WE FORGET!
