All the above victims were waiting for a Remembrance Sunday ceremony to begin at the Enniskillen war memorial when an IRA bomb exploded. The attack became known as the Poppy Day bombing and was widely regarded as 1 of the worst single incidents of the troubles. A 12th man was also injured and died in 2000 after being in a coma for 13 years. Of all those killed in the bombing, all but 1 were civilians. The other man was a police reservist. There were 63 people in all who were injured, some of them seriously injured. The IRA issued a statement the following day expressing its deep regret. It said that 1 of its units planted a remote controlled bomb aimed at soldiers on patrol in connection with the service but not during it. The statement added: in the present climate nothing we can say in explanation can be given the attention which the truth deserves, nor will it compensate the feelings of the injured or bereaved. LEST WE FORGET!
