8 Reasons why your dua may not be getting accepted, courtesy of Duas. 1. Not glorifying Allah or sending blessings (salutations) upon the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) whilst making dua (supplication). It is narrated from Faḍaalah ibn ‘Ubaid (may Allah be pleased with him) who said, The Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard a man making dua in his prayer without glorifying Allah or sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘This man is in a hurry.’ He called him and said to him or to someone else, ‘When anyone of you make dua, let him start by glorifying his Lord and praising Him. then let him send blessings upon the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then let him pray for whatever he wants.’” [Abu Dawood 1481, at-Tirmidhi 3477 and an-Nasaai 1284]. 2. Failing to remember Allah at times of ease and happiness. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Whoever would like to have Allah respond to him during times of hardship should supplicate Him during times of ease.” [at-Tirmidhi 3382] 3. Failing to enjoin the good and forbid the evil. Ḥudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said, “[I swear] by Him in whose hand is my soul, you shall enjoin the good and forbid the evil, or Allah shall certainly soon send His punishment upon you. Then you will supplicate but you will not be answered.” [at-Tirmidhi 2169] 4. Asking other than Allah. “Say, “Who is it that can protect you from Allah if He intends for you an ill or intends for you a mercy?” And they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector or any helper.” [The Qur’an: Surah al-Aḥzab 33:17] 5. Asking for Ḥaram or breaking ties of kinship. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The dua of any worshipper will continue to be responded to, as long as he does not ask for a sin or breaking the ties of kinship…” [Muslim 2735 and Sahih al-Jami 7705] 6. Giving up and being impatient with Allah. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The supplication of any worshipper will continue to be responded to... as long as he is not impatient. It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, and what does it mean to be impatient?” He (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) responded, “The worshipper says, ‘I have supplicated and supplicated , and I don’t see that it will be accepted.’ so he gives up hope of being answered and stops supplicating.” [Muslim 2735 and Sahih al-Jami 7705] 7. Earning, eating, drinking and nourishing on ḥaram. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Surely Allah, The Exalted, is good and only accepts that which is good. Allah has ordered the believers that which He has ordered the Messengers. And He, The Exalted, said, “O you Messengers, eat from the good foods and do righteous deeds…” [The Qur’an: Surah Al-Mu’minoon 23:51]. And He, The Exalted, said, “O You who believe, eat of the good things that We have provided for you…” [The Qur’an: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:172] Then he (i.e. the Messenger of Allah may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned a man who-having traveled far-is disheveled and dusty. He stretches his hand to the sky (saying), “O My Lord! O My Lord” while his food is ḥaram (unlawful), his drink is ḥaram (unlawful), his clothes are ḥaram (unlawful), and he is nourished ḥaram (unlawfully), so how can his supplication be accepted?” [Muslim 1015, at-Tirmidhi 2989, ad-Daaraamee 2719]. 8. Making dua whilst distracted and inattentive. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Supplicate Allah with certainty of being answered and know that Allah does not respond to a heedless and a distracted heart.
