8 Signs Your Internet Girlfriend Is Really A Catfish 0 By Logan Strain on August 12, 2013 · Dating & Relationships, LOL Does the person you’re chatting with online actually exist? Or is she an elaborate persona designed to capture your attention—and maybe even your money? A number of online social media accounts are “Catfish,” completely fictitious characters built by people looking to dupe unsuspecting social media users. They might promise love and romance, but it’s all part of the ruse. Here are eight signs that the person you’re chatting with isn’t who they appear to be. 1) Every Picture Is Model-Perfect Are you starting to notice a trend with all the pictures of your online paramour? Nice lighting. Perfect makeup. The kind of resolution you can only get with a $6,000 camera. If you’re starting to suspect that all the pictures are taken from a professional photography shoot, you’re probably right. Run their images through Google’s reverse image search to see if their pictures pop up on any modeling sites. 2) She Lives Overseas Catfishers will come up with any excuse not to see you in real life, and the most popular one is living across the ocean. 3) She Never Wants To Meet In Person What if she does live close to you but never wants to meet? If she is always coming up with an excuse or is trying to delay the day you meet face-to-face, that’s a huge red flag. 4) She’s Crazy Into You From Day One Catfishers don’t beat around the bush, and typically bypass the “getting to know you” stage in favor of the “soul mates for life” stage. If your digital crush loves everything about you before even knowing anything about you, they are probably just looking for an easy mark. 5) No Video Chat It’s 2013. A camera comes standard with most computers, and everyone who is unable to understand Skype is collecting social security checks. 6) She Doesn’t Have Any Friends Or Followers Is this a legitimate account, or was is made to dupe lovelorn people on the Internet? Social media profiles that only exist to to lure in unsuspecting online daters usually don’t have a lot of honest-to-goodness personal connections. 7) She’s Tight Lipped With Details Fakers usually just think about the big picture and forget about the little things that make us human. If they can’t come forward with simple information—like what they do for work— you should cut and run. 8) She Gets Defensive When You Express Doubt Try telling her that you find it a little weird that she won’t call, skype, or even meet in person. If she gets defensive about it, that’s a sign someone is uncomfortable with the questions. Don’t Be Fooled Catfishers count on the naïveté of their targets. Don’t be afraid to ask some tough questions about the potential love interests you find online, and you’ll never have to suffer the embarrassment (and possible heartache) of being reeled in by an Internet catfish hoax. Think you’ve been catfish? Check her public records to find out if she really exists!
