8 years ago today I took my 2 year old to the pediatrician to figure out what in the heck was going on with him. He was not eating well, vomiting randomly a few times a week, his eyes had dark circles under them and he was losing weight. The Dr asked me a million questions but just couldnt quite put her finger on it - until he pretty much almost passed out on the exam table. She did a urine test. Then a finger stick. Then she looked at me and said, Youre going straight to the emergency room. Im calling to tell them you are on your way and you cannot wait. Your son has diabetes. Dont let him go to sleep on the way. I remember the fear and panic like it was yesterday! Ron trying to keep him awake as I drove. Reece screaming as they tried to get 2 IVs started. Not being able to explain to my baby what was going on or why this was happening. Since that day, my brave little boy has endured over 23,360 finger sticks, 2,160 shots and 730 pump site changes. There are days he gets upset and wants to know why it had to happen to him. But for the most part, he is strong. He deals with it. He never complains. He has taught me so much about strength and determination. Playing sports is rough on his body and the balance and timing of activity, food, and insulin is a tricky one, especially for a kid who is growing. It would be so much easier for him to sit on the couch and play video games. But hes determined to be an athlete. So he works and he practices and he shouts his blood sugar numbers out to me as I sit worried on the sidelines, trying to be just as brave as he is! Diabetes never sleeps. Its 24/7 counting, measuring, guessing, changing and hoping youre getting it right because your childs life depends on it! I hate this disease, but I thank God everyday because He knows what He is doing and I pray He uses everything for a purpose. The last eight years have made all of us stronger, as individuals and as a family. God is at work within us. Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
