8 years ago today, on 8/29/2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in southeastern Louisiana. Despite the horrific devastation and over 1800 confirmed casualties, Katrina was one of the most beautiful hurricanes - a true textbook specimen. What do I mean by a beautiful hurricane and how dare I call such a monster by a compliment? Just look at the satellite image from the time she was a Cat 5 in the Gulf, then a Cat 3 at landfall. Look at the symmetry of the storm. Look at the depth and definition of the eye.
