80-year-old Jojina Zomba, in Kasese, has survived an attack from a lion while she was rushing to rescue her cow that had been attacked by the wild beast. She had ran out of her house after she heard the cattle mooing and bellowing at about 2:00am, Sunday morning. The lion seeing her approach, jumped on to her throwing her to the ground and sunk its teeth into her left leg. She cried out for help, attracting her neighbours attention. Speaking to our reporters (URN) from her sick bed in Kilembe Mines Hospital, the elderly woman said, “I was only saved by the people who came out of their houses, responding to my alarm. They scared away the lion and it took off.” The old woman was then rushed to Kilembe Mines Hospital where, she is lying in deep pain. She looks vividly shaken. The incident happened at Hamukungu fishing village, on Lake George, Kasese district. Resty Mbabazi, who is taking care of her mother at the hospital; says on Christmas Eve, a lion killed five cows from a neighbour’s kraal. Medical workers attending to Zomba say she is stable and responding to treatment. The area manager for the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area, Nelson Guma, confirmed the incident and hailed the people at Hamukungu fishing village for not killing the Lion. Guma said Uganda Wildlife Authority will however not compensate Zomba and those who lost their animals because the law does not cater for it. Meanwhile, reports from Katwe- Kabatoro town council along Lake Edward and about 4kms from Mweya Safari Lodge, says that three lions were seen in the town on Christmas day but left without causing any harm following scare alarms from the people.
