#80 – “Sentimental” by Porcupine Tree This English band originally started out as a hoax by founder Steven Wilson (including fake group history and fictitious band members) and the actual music recorded for the project was merely to add meat to the fabricated story. As it were, the music turned out to be good enough to be promoted and Wilson eventually found proper backing. Initially, Wilson sang and played all instruments. But as the joke turned serious and the brand began to stir up more interest, additional musicians were added to the project. They finally became a full-fledged band during the recording of their third album. Since then, an additional seven studio albums have seen the light of day, with their last (2009’s “The Incident”) climbing into the top 30 in both the US and the UK. Today, Porcupine Tree is an acclaimed progressive rock band on hiatus, while Steve Wilson (the Grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist and producer) focuses on his solo career. “Sentimental”, off their 2007 release “Fear of a Blank Planet”, is a lyrically depressing yet realistic portrayal of the inner sanctum of many young people today. https://youtube/watch?v=teGp1L_-ruA
