81 years for rapist and a murderer Simon Liseli Wednesday, April 30, 2014 - 08:00 Puisano Abel Manyando, 24, was sentenced to an effective 38 years behind bars by the Katima Mulilo Regional Court Magistrate William Kasitomo last month for raping a minor. During October 2011, Manyando had raped a 10-year-old girl on two occasions. At the time he was employed by the victim’s parent as a gardener and were living in the same house at Mavuluma Extension 2 in Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region. Manyando raped the girl while she was asleep and was caught red-handed by the girl’s mother. He admitted guilt, also to a charge of indecent assault by touching the girl’s private parts on a previous occasion. Manyando has been in police custody since his arrest on 26 October 2011 and conducted his own defence. In a separate case, Imanga Lucky Mukungu, 23, was sent to 25 years in jail by the Katima Mulilo Regional Court Magistrate William Kasitomo this month for abduction, kidnapping, rape and attempted rape. On 27 November 2011, Mukungu took a 13-year-old girl from the company of her friends to an empty class at the Mbalasinte Combined School, raped her and attempted to rape her again. He was caught after the girl’s friends alerted a teacher, and he was caught in the classroom with the girl. At the time Mukungu denied any wrongdoing, saying he was only having a discussion with the girl. He was let go by the police but was re-arrested on 10 January 2012 when investigations showed the girl was indeed raped. Mukunga was sentenced to 18 years for rape, five years for attempted rape, and two years for kidnapping. He conducted his own defence and has been in police custody at Katima Mulilo holding cells since his arrest in January 2012. Another case saw a 43-year-old Zambian national, Sitengu Malungo sent to 18 years in jail by Magistrate Kasitomo at the Katima Mulilo Magistrates’ Court last month for murder and possession of ammunition. Malungo pleaded not guilty to murder, alleging that he stabbed the deceased Mwipi Jim Pelekelo in self-defence, and pleaded guilty of possession of ammunition. He was arrested on 9 September 2012 at New Look village at Mudaniko area in eastern Zambezi. Several witnesses testified that Malungo and Pelekelo had an argument when Pelekelo told Malungo to tell his wife not to insult him. After an altercation was stopped by bystanders, Malungo went to his village where he collected a panga and a whip made of a hippo skin and went back to face Pelekelo, who ran away but was caught by Malungo. Pelekelo was first whipped and then stabbed in the chest. He was rushed to Bukalo Clinic where he was pronounced dead. When the police arrested Malungo 15 live rounds of ammunition were found under his bed Malungo was found guilty of murder with direct intent and possession of ammunition. He conducted his own defence.
