82 GOLDEN RULES OF SRI RAMANUJACHARYA In his death bed Sri Ramanuja is said to have articulated 82 statements to his disciples. It is not an exaggeration to present these statements as the essence of Sri Vaishnavam. To our understanding, they were meant to be moral aids to his disciples in their relations to God, men and devotees. Golden Rule 7 - Consider all the pleasures of senses equal It is not sufficient if a disciple controls his sense of taste, and let loose other four senses. Illegitimate use of senses would produce dreadful consequences. Suppose, one controls his four senses and makes an improper use of his fifth, he is equally ruined. It, therefore, follows that, if, eternal beatitude is aimed at, perfect morality is an absolute necessity and indispensable qualification. Chapter III verse 7 of Bhagavad Gita, says, yas tva indriyani manasa niyamyarabhate arjuna karmendriyaih karma-yogam asaktah sa visisyate Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that controls over five senses could only be established through mind power. As no human being ever had an independent mind... everything was governed by our brain that worked as a receiving and transmitting station. Based on invocation of thoughts, our senses indulged in sense objects. By controlling mind, we could indirectly establish absolute control over five senses! Swami Ramanuja’s commentary: Controlling the senses by strength of mind, utilising them to assist in achieving attma tattva by performing the prescribed duties given in the Vedic scriptures according to the natural attributes found within their character by the natural disposition of their natural impulses, then that person although performing karma yoga the yoga of actions is superior to the performer of jnana yoga the yoga of cultivating knowledge inasmuch as falsely performing jnana yoga with duplicity is far inferior to performing karma yoga with sincerity.
