83. Marked from your Lord (for the destruction of the wicked). And they are never far from the wrong-doers. (Thus were the people of Lot destroyed for their sin, and their country turned to a pile of stones. Let all who commit like crimes take note. Next we turn to the people of Midian. Midian is the archetype of a further type of evil: economic. Knowing not the One True God, they felt that they could do as they pleased with their wealth, and defraud others, and live in thoughtless luxury. ) 84. And to Midian (We sent) their brother Shu ayb. He said: 0 my people! Serve Allah. You have no other god but Him. Do not give short measure or weight. I see you in prosperity, but I fear for you the penalty of a day that will compass (you) all around. 85. And 0 my people! Give just measure and weight, nor withhold from the people the things that are their due. And do not commit evil in the land, causing corruption. 86. What Allah leaves with you is the best for you, if you are believers. And I am no guardian over you. 87. They said (in sarcasm): 0 Shuayb! Does your Prayer command you that we should leave that which our forefathers worshipped or that we should cease doing what we like with our property? Truly, you are clement, right-minded! 88. (Shuayb) said: 0 my people! What do you think, if I stand upon a clear sign from my Lord, and He has sustained me with fair sustenance from Himself? (how could!, then, be f party to your evil and unlawful practices?) I do not wish to oppose you and then to commit which I forbid you to do. I only wish to set things right so far as I am able. And my success (in my task) can only come from Allah. In Him do I trust, and unto Him do I turn (repentant). 89. And 0 my people! Let your disagreement with me not bring upon you the doom which overtook the peoples of Noah, Hud and Salih. And the people of Lot are not far (in time) from you. 90. Ask forgiveness of your Lord and turn to him (in repentance). For my Lord is indeed Merciful, Loving. 91. They said: 0 Shu ayb; we do not understand much of what you say. In fact we see that you are powerless among us. Were it not for your family we would have stoned you, for you are not strong against us. 92. He said: 0 my people! Is then my family of more consideration with you than Allah? And you put Him behind you, neglected! My Lord encompasses the things you do. 93. And, 0 my people! Do whatever you will; so shall I. You will soon know on whom will descend a penalty of ignominy, and who is a liar. And watch, for I, too, am watching with you. 94. And when Our commandment came to pass We delivered Shuayb and those who believed with him by a mercy from Us. And the (awful) Cry seized those who worked injustice, and the morning found them prostrate in their dwellings. 95. As if they had never dwelt there. A far removal for Midian, even as Thamoud was far removed! (The people of Shu ayb were destroyed by a disaster resembling that which encompassed Thamoud, evidently a deafening blast accompanied by volcanic explosions. Before turning to general teachings, the narration now briefly recalls the story of Moses, which, as the classic emblem of the conflict between revelation and statist tyranny, is referred to several times in the Holy Qur an. This time, the story is told in the context of the Silrahs general theme: the danger of submitting to false leadership and blind tradition, and failure to recognize the signs of the Lord.) 96. And We sent Moses with Our revelations and a clear authority, 97. Unto Pharaoh and his nobles. But they followed the command of Pharaoh, and the command of Pharaoh was no right (guide). 98. (For) he shall go before his people on the Day of Resurrection and will lead them to the Fire. Evil is the place to which they are led.
